Types of Car Carriers

If your automobile is being transported by semi truck car carrier, it is good to know the different kinds of car carriers that might be transporting your vehicle. The service between car carriers vary depending on what type of tractor/trailer set up is used. The main types of car carrier trailers are Enclosed Transport and Open Transport.

Enclosed car carriers are used for high value, exotic car, and collectible vehicle transport. Enclosed Transport costs more due to the expense of the transport equipment, number of car spaces , and high liability/property insurance. Enclosed Transport trailers are fully enclosed making damage from road debris virtually impossible. Enclosed Transport trailers allow loading of low ground clearance vehicles such as exotic cars and race cars. Enclosed carriers have 1 to 2 loading levels to hold vehicles. If you have a valuable vehicle and feel it is important that you get the highest protection Enclosed Transport is the way to go. Enclosed Transport can cost twice or more than the price of open transport.

Open Transport is the most common seen and used method of auto transport. Open Transport carriers can have 1 or 2 levels with vehicles loaded closely together. The amount of vehicles open carriers can transport at a time depends on the design and size (length) trailer. The amount of vehicles open carriers can hold ranges from 2  to 10 cars.

The cost for auto transport depends on your service time line and vehicle transport requirements (enclosed or open transport). Most vehicles are transported on open 6-10 car carriers if they are on normal delivery scheduling. If your vehicle shipping needs require expedited services your vehicle many be transported on a carrier that holds  6 cars or less. Carriers that transport over 6 vehicles at a time take longer to deliver vehicles but also charge less because cost is offset by the number of cars carried. For faster transport service your vehicle might be moved on a smaller capacity car carrier. Carriers that hold 2, 4, or 6 cars at a time will be faster due to less loading/unloading.

Pros and Cons

Pros of the 6-10 car carriers are cheaper transport cost. The cons bigger car carriers are longer transport time for pick up and delivery. Bigger car carriers pack and stack vehicles very close making it easier for in damage to occur. Pros for smaller car carriers are faster pickup and delivery times. Smaller carriers have less risk of vehicle damage during loading and unloading due to the fact that they may have only one loading level. Cons to smaller car carriers can be price. Since smaller car carriers do not haul as much vehicles the transport rates are usually higher.
